Yeray Rodrguez and his Barranco abajo, in the XXX edition of the Nanino Daz Cutillas Memorial - The Province

The singer and musician Yeray Rodríguez presents on the 29th, at 20.00, in the Víctor Jara Theater, the show called Ravine down, inspired by the oral tradition and popular music of the Canary Islands. The mentioned assembly is included in the program of the XXX edition of the Diaz Cutillas Memorial organized by the Gran Canaria Cabildo through the Foundation that bears the name of the popular folklorist, with the close collaboration of the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana.

Ravine down, which has a musical adaptation by Javier Cerpa, tells the story of a muleteer who lives in the summits of Gran Canaria and decides to emigrate to the coast. Yeray Rodríguez is the author of the text that is inspired by the oral tradition and popular music of the Canary Islands. It is an exercise of memory and homage to the inhabitants of the interior of the island, which Mario Vega directs.

The show, premiered at the end of last year in the Pérez Galdós theater from the capital of Gran Canaria, is a production of the Auditorium and Theater Foundation "is an exercise of memory using the patterns of oral tradition that has come down to us", explains Yeray Rodríguez, that is accompanied in the assembly of a band of musicians that integrate the own Cerpa next to Ner Suárez, Silvestre Ramírez and Fernando Sanchez. Further, Ravine down has the support of the actress and vocalist Thania Hill, the singers Pedro Manuel Afonso and Candelaria González and the brothers Francisco and María Belén Sánchez, from Valsequillo, two precocious voices with tradition in the ranch of souls and Cuban point.

It is a story of the internal emigration in Gran Canaria, from the summit to the coast, "written in romance and tenth", which has been implemented with "a series of musical themes that have another record: there is seguidilla, copla, ranch of bores, is a kind of soundtrack of that landscape, "says Yeray Rodríguez.

Barranco Abajo It is the story of a muleteer from the summits of the island who decides to emigrate to the coast with all his family. The night before the game, sleepless, he goes through his life and that of his family, which the next day will go down the ravine. However, behind this seemingly banal story, feelings that go beyond the context where it occurs: the departure, the memory of childhood, the longing for those who are not, the astonishment with which the world is discovered. that counted on the magic of a peasant language that is able to explain the world from its world.

Yeray Rodríguez describes 'Barranco Abajo' as a tribute to the memory of a part of ourselves, which is in the bowels of the island but also to the memory of a generation that has seen that everything has changed too quickly. It is a text full of past but that does not shirk the present nor the future, with a staging that will melt verses and songs.

On the 30th, at 9:00 p.m., in the Plaza de Santa Lucía de Tirajana, the popular program of Televisión Española in the Canary Islands will be recorded, Stall. The program directed by Raúl Arencibia will feature on this occasion with choirs and dances from La Gomera, Abruncos (Tenerife) and the soloists Borja Matos Perdomo and Sergio Pérez Suárez, from Santa Lucía de Tirajana. From March 25 to 29 you can also enjoy the two exhibitions entitled Nanino Díaz Cutillas: know, make see Y Cantadores, curated both by the professor of the ULPGC, Yeray Rodríguez, who will be exhibited at the headquarters of the Municipal Athenaeum. The inauguration of the same will take place on Monday, March 25, at 6:00 pm, with the screening of the documentary called The traditional use of plant fibers in Gran Canaria, produced by the FEDAC of the Gran Canaria Cabildo.

It must be remembered that since 1990 the Diaz Cutillas Memorial was held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a city that hosted it during its initial decade, until, in 2001, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria decided that this event would be itinerant for the municipalities of the Island.

Carlos Ruiz announced that the 31st edition of the memorial will be celebrated in 2020 in Valleseco, thus completing the itinerary for our island geography. Therefore, in 2021, the second edition of this unique journey dedicated to folk music and the main defender that has been held to date, Nanino Díaz Cutillas, will begin.
