The fulfillment of eighty years since the last part of the war of the Spanish civil war, on April 1, 1939, will be the argument of one of the cycles of the XXXI Book Fair of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which will be held from April 30 to May 5 next, in the San Telmo Park of the Gran Canaria capital, and which is, in turn, the main activity of the month of the book, a month full of events in which all the cultural centers of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria collaborate.
With the title of '1939-2019: 80 years, are we at peace?', The book Fair It will celebrate a cycle of presentation of works related to the Civil War or the Franco dictatorship. On May 1st this cycle will open with the presentation of the Civil War Library, driven by the Editorial Almuzara, with the participation of the creator of the publisher, Manuel Pimentel, former Minister of Labor. Pimentel will present its editorial and its Library of the Civil War (which includes works by Dolores Ibarruri, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, Federica Montseny, Rafael Garcia Serrano, Indalecio Prieto, Hector Colmegna or Father Caballero, among others) accompanied by also former minister and ex President of the Canary Islands, Jerónimo Saavedra. Both will reflect on the wounds still open 80 years after that last part of the war.
The recently released Broken Communities. A global history of the civil wars (1917-2017) (Galaxia Gutenberg), the historian and professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and expert on the Spanish struggle, Javier Rodrigo, will continue the editorial reflection on it, on Thursday, May 2 .
More than fifty authors
In addition, the XXXI Book Fair of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will feature, in its adult programming, the presentation of new works by more than fifty national and Canarian authors, and others 70 editorial authors from Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, in a parallel tent called Continuous Session, and that will be one of the novelties of this new edition.
In this space, Canarian authors and publishers will join the cycle from different perspectives and genres: novel (Honorables, by Juan José Jiménez, Ed. The poster of the XXXI Book Fair of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is featured in this edition by a child with autism, as the event pivots on inclusion, the theme on which all the activity of the six days of the festival revolves. letters. In this edition the prominence of the books will open the range with the firm objective of reaching everyone in a close and accessible way.
This interest in creating an inclusive space, extending the concept of accessibility to formulate a place where all the attendees can be integrated without barriers is what has given meaning to the choice of poster, which illustrates a painting by the Venezuelan painter Neliam Rivas with autistic disorder as the protagonist.
