Chinese President Xi Jinping will make his first official visit to Panama on December 2 and 3 to meet with his Panamanian counterpart, Juan Carlos Varela, and continue deepening their cooperation after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in June of the year. past.

The Chinese authorities explained today that the visit of Xi will aim to continue improving bilateral cooperation, which has had a "good start" and in the last year has advanced "quickly and efficiently."

It is expected that Xi and Varela will sign several cooperation agreements in the field of electronic commerce, commercial services, infrastructure, maritime transport, finance, culture or education, among others.

The Chinese president will arrive in Panama after participating in the G20 Summit in Argentina, so he will also take advantage of his meeting with Varela to address issues of mutual interest at the regional level.

Varela already made a state visit to China at the end of last year, after announcing in June the recognition of the "one China" principle and the cessation of diplomatic relations that he maintained until then with Taiwan, beginning a stage historic between Panama and Beijing.

"I am very pleased, the truth, great news, the unprecedented, momentous visit of President Xi Jinping to Panama, another important achievement in the foreign policy of the country," the Panamanian president said on Thursday about the "historic" visit of Xi. .

China is currently the second most important user of the Panama Canal, behind the United States, and the first supplier of the Colon Free Zone, the largest in the hemisphere, located in the Panamanian Caribbean.

Both countries are negotiating for the signing of a free trade agreement, which has already reached four rounds.
