With dozens of activities and focused on the family

Determined to act as a factor in the cohesion of her family in the face of adversity, Ms. Sofia, who turns 80 tomorrow, has assumed her new role as the mother of a king without reducing the pace of her public activities, especially social and cultural initiatives. linked to his career.

While the already famous video with the mismatch after the Easter Mass in the Cathedral of Palma on April 1 has diverted many glances in search of an alleged rivalry with Queen Letizia, Doña Sofía multiplies her presence in dozens of acts, inside and outside of Spain, although a significant number of them no longer appear on the official agenda of the Royal Family.

Although, after the relay in the Crown, gave the witness to Queen Letizia in entities such as Unicef-Spain, Spanish Red Cross, the Royal Board on Disability and the Foundation for Help Against Drug Addiction (FAD), retains several cultural awards that lead his name and maintains a direct involvement in the activities of the Reina Sofia School of Music.

But, above all, what has allowed him to take advantage of his seemingly inexhaustible energy - "I am 80 years old, but a mind of 50", he commented with pride recently - to banish the threat of retirement and to use today his proclaimed objective of "being useful to Spain", has been the Queen Sofia Foundation, of which she is executive president.

Through this organization, constituted in 1977 thanks to a small capital contributed by her, she continues promoting educational, health and humanitarian projects to help children, elderly, immigrants and disabled people in four continents and in Spain itself, where she offered an increasing support the most disadvantaged in the hardest years of the economic crisis.

To this end it has contributed with frequent visits and aid operations to different Food Banks, although the most emblematic initiative of the foundation is the Alzheimer Project, which develops most of its prevention, research and treatment works from an open center in 2007 in Madrid and that has achieved worldwide relevance at the hands of Mrs. Sofia.

Precisely Alzheimer Center hosted in May last year, on the occasion of its first decade and the 40 years of the Foundation, a great tribute to the Queen Sofia in which Felipe VI, in the presence of Don Juan Carlos and Letizia, praised " the great example "of his mother, to whom he expressed" recognition and admiration "for his" humanity and commitment "to the most disadvantaged.

The first two years of her son's reign were for her a time of adaptation, of transfers of functions between public praise of Doña Letizia - "Never the word mother-in-law has sounded better" -, of farewells, full of nostalgia, to the FAD and almost two decades of travel in support of Spanish cooperation, with which toured 34 countries.

However, with his new status he has participated in fifteen acts and institutional ceremonies abroad, has received a dozen national and international awards and recognitions, and has accompanied in other official activities other members of the Royal Family, with frequent appearances with Don Juan Carlos since, a year and a half ago, he put an end to his previous estrangement.

Just like when she was queen consort, in all this time her dedication to the family has been very visible, the permanent support to the Infanta Cristina and her four children, before and after Iñaki Urdangarin's imprisonment, and the passion for his eight grandchildren, which in the case of Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía had traumatic consequences in terms of public image for the frustrated photo in the Cathedral of Palma.

Always worried about preserving the image of a united family, Sofía has been employed to the maximum in the last ten years to guarantee that goal in the face of adversities such as the divorce of her eldest daughter, the judicial viacrucis of the Nóos case and the crisis opened by the effects of the relationship of King Juan Carlos with Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein.

Her marriage is far from over in 1962, when she began to stop being a stranger in Spain in order to gain in a short time the respect and affection of those who immediately considered her a compatriot - "I am Spanish one hundred percent", always proudly proclaims - in a country who has dedicated three quarters of his life and where he has shown prudent intelligence at key moments, such as 23-F, and closeness to those who suffer.
