The fight to win the online market is more evident in the fashion sector. If Inditex announced recently that all of the chain's stores will sell through the Internet in all its markets by 2020, now it is H & M who is firmly committed to this channel. Thus, as ABC has learned, the Swedish fashion chain will establish a new logistics center in our country, specifically in the Iberum Central Platform, located in the town of Illescas (Toledo). This will be the largest logistics center that will have a company in Spain, since it will consist of 44,000 square meters.
The developer responsible for building the ship is Mountpark, which has invested in total about 30 million euros. The completion of the works is scheduled for next June, although H & M does not expect the ship to start operating until the last quarter of 2019 or the first of 2020.
Company sources tell this newspaper that the operation is currently at a very early stage and that H & M's objective is to improve both the customer's shopping experience as the efficiency and flexibility of the supply chain in the online market. For this, the chain will have the cooperation of one of the largest providers of transport services and logistics services, XPO Logistics.
The location of the new logistics center is not accidental, since Illescas has become a key point for logistics in our country. Thus, in the Iberum Central Platform of the locality of Toledo is Amazon, the main reference in electronic commerce. In addition to the company directed by Jeff Bezos, other companies located in Illescas are Michelin, Toyota and Airbus.
The digital commitment of the fashion chain is not new. Thus, in the latest results presented by the Swedish company, until September, where the online channel had a growth of 32% compared to 9% of physical stores, its CEO, Karl-Johan Persson, confirmed that the commitment to the Internet is total, since he believes that it will improve the group's sales and its market share. The turnover in our country grew by 10%, although the number of physical stores was reduced by four, to 173.
Within its online strategy, H & M follows in the footsteps of its competitor in Spain, Inditex. In fact, following in the footsteps of the Spanish group, he expects that by 2020 the online channel will be present in all the markets where it sells. It will be necessary to see, however, how this investment in the new logistics center affects its future accounts. Specifically, in the latest results, the company admitted that it had less benefits for extraordinary costs when installing these warehouses in countries such as Italy, the United States, France and Belgium.
