What would Spain be like if 7,600 kilometers of train tracks had not disappeared? This map shows it

In 1993 there were 7,600 kilometers of disused railway in Spain. It is, for example, the distance in a straight line from Seville to New Delhi. Since then, the Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles —funded largely with contributions from Renfe and Adif— has converted more than 3,100 kilometers of track into roads and cycle tracks: the so-called Vías Verdes, pleasant asphalt trails that run away from the highways. That means that there are still 4,500 kilometers of abandoned roads, which have either been closed or never opened.
