What medications can affect your sex life? – The province

There are millions of reasons why a person can have low libido. Sometimes, lack of sexual desire occurs well by stress or for suffering a depression. Low self-esteem doesn’t help either. In other cases, the decrease in sexual appetite is caused by discomfort when having sex for dryness and pain in the genital area, or simply pregnancy and postpartum. And in many others, it may be due to the medication intake (We have no choice but to take).

Thus, just as there are drugs that can help us improve our sex lives, there are also others that can become a considerable enemy. They are drugs whose consumption is widespread and that can cause various alterations ranging from the loss of sexual desire to having difficulty getting aroused or reaching orgasm. These are some medications that can compromise a satisfying and full sex life.

Contraceptives

The oral contraceptive pill has advantages and disadvantages. It can help resolve irregular menstruation or painful periods or attempts, but it could also affect sexual desire due to the same hormones that are responsible for blocking the possibility of pregnancy, as reflected by different studies. Although it is not a common side effect, experts advise trying different pills or directly changing the contraceptive method.

Another side effect of these pills is the vaginal dryness, circumstance that causes discomfort at the time of having sexual relations and, therefore, diminishes the sexual appetite.

Hormonal treatments

On the opposite side, the consumption of anabolic steroids, corticosteroids and estrogens significantly influences the levels of testosterone and androgens, which in turn tend to sink libido and generate erection difficulties. The effects that these treatments can cause in men include testicular atrophy and azoospermia (absence of sperm in the semen).

Antihistamines

Certain antihistamines that are bought over the counter, such as diphenhydramine and chlorphenamine, can affect sexual performance. However, the effect that these antihistamines normally have does not exceed the day of duration, so it would be enough to be careful with the schedules. It is important to know that the compounds mentioned may be present in medicines for cold or cough

Antidepressants

Although practically all antidepressants have effects on libido, the drugs that most often interfere with sexual intercourse are the so-called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The best known is the Prozac. Also the Zoloft. By taking them, serotonin levels increase, so improves mood, but € decreases sexual desire.

High levels of serotonin are also related to the slowdown of the sexual response and the delay and even the orgasm inhibition. The same can be applied to relaxants and sedatives such as the well-known Diazepam.

Tricyclic antidepressants

This category includes, for example, Elavil, Tryptizol or Laroxyl, which are usually prescribed to treat migraines wave anxiety. The decrease in sexual libido is among its most common side effects.

Antiepileptic

Antiepileptics or anticonvulsants are prescribed to treat epilepsy and, in some cases, bipolar disorder. Tegretol is one of the best known drugs to cushion nerve impulses and prevent epileptic seizures. The other side of the coin is that they can also reduce pleasant sensations, as well as the orgasm itself.

Drugs for high blood pressure

This type of medication lowers blood pressure, which sometimes causes the penis not to fill with blood and, therefore, that erection does not occur. Drugs such as thiazide diuretics can decrease sexual desire, cause erectile dysfunction and reduce vaginal lubrication.

On the other hand, beta blockers, used for heart failure or angina pectoris, can also affect the libido and generate alterations in erectile function.

Benzodiazepines

These medications, of the most widespread to treat anxiety and insomnia, also affect sexual performance. However, studies in this regard do not clarify whether it is the drug that causes the dysfunction or if it is the anxiety that decreases the libido.
