What is being said during a terrorist attack?

An attack on a well-known museum (none concrete) of any city in the heart of Europe. Two of those present, Marc (Ángel Ruiz) and Helen (María Morales), get away as good as they can from the chaos until they take refuge in a cleaning room that acts as a metaphor for all that dark side behind the most beautiful (here, paintings). He, a worker at the center, and she, head of communication of a political party (unspecified), should from this point raise a function, “Attacked”, which “tries to create a space for dialogue that delves into the drama,” explain their directors, Felix Estaire – at the same time, author of the text – and Xus de la Cruz.

What to do to survive? How to react? Would the people next to them have died? How long to stay? … These are some of the dilemmas that the protagonists will begin to consider while, in a space-time leap, Eva Rufo plays a news director. Little more do the members of the assembly want to tell: “So far we can read,” says Estaire, biting her tongue.

The power of the media

What the author and director proposes in “Attack” (in the Spanish Theater from tomorrow to February 16) is to talk about the mechanisms of communication “and the power of the media,” says de la Cruz: what generates in each one what that enters us through the eyes and ears, what does it mean, how far the human being is independent … “It is a piece that has made me reflect a lot,” continues the director. «You consider the role of the Press, how far it is faithful to reality or if there is only one truth». The three figures will reflect on this, each with its own point of view: one trusts the truth, another thinks that it is very subjective and the other believes in a midpoint between the extremes. The consumption of the media by the public becomes the center of the dialectic between Marc and Helen. “The main thing has been not to inhabit spaces of certainty, but of doubt,” says Rufo. My character represents the bewilderment. They are people who inhabit complex situations and do not represent ideas that fly over, but personal decisions, individual responsibility and how each one is placed with respect to a conflict, ”says the actress of a character who“ disorients ”her in relation to power: «His superiors take his word, his work tool. What happens to us when we cannot use what gives us more security because if we do we are partakers of interests that are above us? », Asks a Rufo that recognizes that the recent resignation of Almudena Ariza to be director of the news TVE has helped her build her character. It is one of the few references cited by those involved, who have preferred not to point to any specific side within the function.

«In the end we talk about human beings in a limiting circumstance. It is known that it is a European museum and little else, ”Morales acknowledges before Estaire explains the reason for placing the plot within one:“ They gather a cluster of images that have been building the collective imaginary. These centers are repositories of icons, as if it were an album of historical photos that involves the protagonists ». It is one of the few clarifications made by the director of a project that began four years ago, but of which «I am not clear about the starting point. I just wanted to try to understand something. The references to the attacks of Atocha or Bataclán are, but they are not mentioned, ”he says of a piece that aims to make the public reflect on some aspects of life such as otherness, misrepresentation, human relations in public and private spheres and use we make of others, among other aspects.
