Way of living

The journalist Fernando Navarro has just given the press a compilation of his pieces written during the pandemic. Contrary to other pandemic texts, Navarro's are not written from the first person, since the true protagonists of his pieces are the musicians; the workplace victims of a virus that has wreaked havoc in a Madrid that, when voting, opted for the freedom of the market represented by Isabel Díaz Ayuso.

Because the people of Madrid are, above all, hospitable people. In one of the texts in Fernando Navarro's book, the Granada-born cantaor, Enrique Morente, affirms that Madrid welcomes everyone "without indicating where you are from." That is why the people of Madrid are the least nationalistic people in the whole country. To confirm this, it is enough to point out that the two most representative hymns of Madrid are songs of hatred towards the city. "Este Madrid", by Leño and "Let's say I'm talking about Madrid", by Joaquín Sabina, are not exactly love songs. They are written from anger –Leño– and from regret –Sabina-. Few cities can afford that.

Now let's continue with Ayuso, because the Cayetanos and those who are not, and aspire to be one day, have voted for Ayuso, they say, for the bravery shown during the pandemic, by allowing theaters and theaters not to close down together to the baretos, thus maintaining a pulse with the Government whose result has been translated into votes in favor of the president of the Community of Madrid.

What Ayuso has done is maintain a reckless attitude. And what happens here is that courage is confused with recklessness; The first being a virtue by which the human being faces a difficult situation, which has nothing to do with recklessness, which is an imprudent solution with catastrophic results. Having someone reckless at the head of the institutions is bad, let's say nefarious.

Let us remember what happened in Russia, during the hostage crisis at the Dubrovka theater in Moscow, when more than a hundred hostages were gassed to death in the action commissioned by President Putin to the special forces. But since the terrorists were eliminated, the most outspoken people applauded Putin for his misnamed bravery, which here in Spain is synonymous with testicular greatness.

Ayuso has done something similar, opening bars and entertainment venues during the pandemic. If we analyze the situation, doing what Putin or Ayuso did is the easiest thing to do. The prudent thing, and his in the case of Ayuso, would have been to establish aid for musicians and comedians, artists and people who earn their living giving the best they have on stage. To say that the aid had not been extended to its beloved hoteliers, because, in this country of services, the hotel industry is cultural heritage and Madrid cannot be understood without its Mahou and without its squid sandwich. In short, a little sensitivity towards those who wake up with the alarm clock to give the callus.

And this is one of the many reflections that one makes after reading Fernando Navarro's book, a compilation of pieces where criticism underlies each line; a sad story of Madrid and its most emblematic places, as well as its musicians, victims of the pandemic and of an institutional policy that has not been up to the task.

Good books are those that, once finished, never stop asking us questions. This is one of them. It's called "Ways to Live", and it was just edited by Muddy Waters. Do not lose sight.
