Iberia land workers in El Prat serve 65% of the operations as they serve the rest of the IAG companies and the One World alliance (Qatar Airways British Airways, Latam, Airl Lingus, etc …) up to a total of 27 companies, to protest the work overload, which could generate problems since it coincides with the return of July vacations and the beginning of August.

The Generalitat of Catalonia called on Friday to business and unions to a new mediation meeting to try to call off the strike, although, after more than six and a half hours of meeting, the meeting ended again without agreement, so the strikes remain.

Vueling, the most affected

The «low cost» Vueling, is the one that operates the most flights in El Prat, is the most affected company with the cancellation of 112 flights, which will affect 7% of travelers, 95% of which will be relocated to other planes the same day or the next.

The strike committee has called on the company to stabilize employment, transforming all part-time permanent workersto full-time fixedor, and pass fixed to 400 casual workers, of a workforce of more than 1,000 people.

Workers' representatives believe that this would solve most of the problems currently suffered by the workforce, such as "compulsory overtime abuse" or the reorganization of shifts and schedules that would allow Iberia Barcelona staff to work in "decent conditions".

Iberia has responded to these accusations and claimed that the airline cannot negotiate contract transformations of the El Prat Airport staff because it is outside the scope of the business committee at the Barcelona airport.

According to Iberia, in the framework of the negotiations initiated by another strike called by the same dates last year, the majority unions in El Prat agreed that this issue should beI would commission the company's employment commission, and being an agreement signed at the state level, the transformation of contracts cannot be negotiated at the local level.

Concern in the Generalitat

For its part, the Generalitat has asked the company, through an administrative requirement, information on the measures that the airline plans to take to address this strike.

Specifically, the Catalan Government has requested information on scheduled flights during the stops, the number of total passengers and the number of companies to which Iberia provides some type of service, and therefore could also be affected by the strike.

The Autonomous Government has recalled that, in case of incidents, users have right to file a claim to the airlines in person, on the web or by phone and, if it is not resolved in a month, they can go to any public consumption agency.

The Ministry of Development decreed last Thursday minimum services of 100% of domestic flights with non-peninsular territories, 54% of international flights and 32% of peninsular territories whose transportation alternative is less than five hours.
