Von der Leyen cancels the visit to Greece due to the coronavirus



The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has decided to postpone sine die the visit to Athens that she had planned to carry out today, to focus on the coordination of the European fight against the coronavirus.

According to the Greek Government, Von der Leyen communicated to the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, his decision last night.

The two planned to visit the Eleonas refugee camp in Athens together today and meet with representatives of humanitarian organizations.

One of the main objectives of the visit was to gain insight into the situation of unaccompanied minor refugees.

This week, Germany announced that it would be willing to welcome together with other European countries between 1,000 and 1,500 children out of the around 5,000 in the camps, according to official data.
