As happened in the first match against Sivasspor, Paco Alcácer had to go out onto the pitch and score two goals to give Villarreal victory, this time it was against Qarabag, who came back in just four minutes to take the 1-3 win and to be in front of group I of the Europa League.
A goal by Owusu in the 78th minute put Villarreal on the ropes, but Unai Emery’s changes were key, since the youth squad Yeremy first and later Alcácer, turned the score around in the blink of an eye. In the extension time, a clear penalty against Álex Baena, another of the changes, was used by Alcácer to close the game.
Despite not being able to play in their stadium due to the armed conflict between Azarbaijan and Armenia, Qarabag came out on the pitch with great daring, taking possession of Villarreal and arriving with many troops to the Spanish area, although the Rulli goal did not go through great difficulties.
Villarreal could not display the game they are accustomed to, before the great meeting of the Azerbaijanis, although he enjoyed more clear chances for his rival to score.
At a quarter of an hour, Bacca crashed a headbutt into the post, and a couple of minutes later it was Peña who saw how the crossbar repelled a center of his that was poisoning itself. After half an hour a direct free by Manu Trigueros became the third great chance for the Castellón, but the local goal avoided both with a great save.
In the resumption, Villarreal managed to change the game script, with longer possessions and with patience. The chances began to come clearly. Take Kubo moved freely between the lines and Chukwueze starred in the clearest but unlucky opportunities.
When the game looked like it was going to fall in favor of Villarreal at any moment, Qarabag surprised the Qarabag with a sensational pass from Andrade that spiked the ball over the defense and Owusu spliced to cross the ball and score the first goal of the game.
Villarreal responded brilliantly with a goal from youth squad Yeremy, in a great personal action, and Alcácer certified the comeback on the first ball he touched.
The Valencian striker certified the victory by transforming a maximum penalty in the extension time and scoring his fourth goal in the competition, in just half an hour of play in the first two days.– Data sheet:
