Venezuelan NGO calls for independent investigation for the death of councilman Albán

The Venezuelan NGO Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones (OVP) asked in a statement that it was announced today that an international commission of experts carry out an independent investigation into the death of the opposition councilman Fernando Albán, while he was in a police building and in state custody.

The OVP indicated in the text that before the alleged "contradictory versions by representatives of the national government" after the death of Albán, an independent investigation is necessary that "presents a public report".

The Venezuelan prosecutor's office reported Monday that Albán died after being thrown into the void from the 10th floor of the building of the Intelligence Service (Sebin) when he requested to go to the bathroom "and being there was launched".

That same Monday, the Ministry of the Interior indicated that Albán threw himself when he was in a waiting room, and yesterday the head of the Prosecutor's Office, Tarek Saab, ratified the self-inflicted death thesis but pointed out that not from a bathroom of the building, but during the "lunch" and before reaching the bathroom, which he asked to go.

These apparent inconsistencies, as well as the alleged testimonies of internal sources of the Sebin cited by opponents and questioning the official version have stimulated the allegations that point to the hypothesis of "homicide" in this case.

The OVP also said in the text that the commission investigating the case should be created by the Secretary General of the UN, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

The request of the OVP joins that of the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), the Catholic Church, political parties, human rights organizations and several governments, which have asked the Executive of Nicolás Maduro Independent investigation that determines responsibilities in this case.

Albán was arrested last Friday at the Simón Bolívar International Airport, which serves Caracas, when he arrived to visit his children in the United States, according to statements made by his relatives.
