The Venezuelan government announced on Saturday that it will denounce before international instances the recent sanction issued by the Administration of the US president, Donald Trump, against its state airline, while calling the measure a “big mistake” political.
“We will be carrying our voice of protest, our denunciation, before the international instances for this arbitrary, extraterritorial and illegal measure made by the United States Government,” the Vice President for the Economic Area of the South American country, Tarek el Aissami, told reporters.
“It has been a big mistake what the Government of the United States made,” continued El Aissami, whom the Trump Administration accused of drug trafficking in late 2019.
According to the Venezuelan official, the United States applied the sanction after hearing “to the most unsuccessful voices of the Venezuelan opposition right,” and recalled that only days ago the opposition leader Juan Guaidó, whom almost 60 countries recognize as interim president, was ” in Washington asking for more sanctions. “
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury yesterday identified 40 aircraft of the airline Conviasa, which operates on national routes and certain international destinations, as subjects of sanctions for being owned by the Government of Venezuela.
The secretary of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin, said in a statement that the government of Nicolás Maduro depends on Conviasa “to move corrupt regime officials around the world to boost support for their anti-democratic efforts.”
But El Aissami said today that Conviasa is carrying out humanitarian and peace work, being key in a plan for the return of several thousand Venezuelan emigrants from countries such as Colombia, Chile, Ecuador or Peru.
He also said that Conviasa “will continue to grow and expand”, without revealing details of the strategy that the company will follow to obtain spare parts, fuels and maintain the routes in allied countries of the United States.
“We will continue exploring new destinations, we will continue advancing in the construction of an airline that reaches the free skies of other towns,” he said.
