Venezuela takes "reciprocal measure" and expel Ecuador's charge d'affaires

The Government of Venezuela announced today that it declared persona non grata to the business manager of Ecuador in Caracas, Elizabeth Méndez, who gave 72 hours to leave the country, in return for the expulsion of the Venezuelan ambassador in Quito, Carol Delgado.

The Venezuelan government said in a statement that it was "forced to take reciprocal action" after the expulsion of its ambassador in Ecuador, while lamenting the diplomatic friction, which he described as "an unprecedented act that threatens the historic relations of brotherhood" between these two Andean countries.

Ecuador today expelled the Venezuelan ambassador following a controversial statement on Wednesday by the Minister of Communication and Information of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez.
