The Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, has advanced that "the ideal" for the work that could be an original painting by Caravaggio is that "it should be in the Prado Museum, which is the natural place of a work as wonderful as this one".
"At some point the ideal will be that," said the minister in statements collected by Europa Press during a working day in Rome (Italy), where he visited, among other institutions, the Royal Academy of Spain or the exhibition 'Goya Fisonomista' in the Cervantes Institute.
When asked about this assumption 'Caravaggio', detected last April before an auction, the minister has assured that the Ministry acted "with all the speed as soon as it became known of its existence.
"The Community of Madrid has collaborated by declaring the work BIC and now it will be necessary to see when (a decision is made). At the moment it cannot leave Spain. We have an old precedent in the 70s of a Caravaggio that left and ended in Cleveland Y that will not happen again", has assured.
The Ansorena gallery withdrew last Wednesday, April 7, a work that represents a scene of Christ as an 'ecce homo' and that was scheduled to go on sale for a price of 1,500 euros. The reason is that the work, which was attributed to a painter from the workshop of Jose de RiberaIt could be a Caravaggio original.
The Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, he backed his department's decision to withdraw the work from a Spanish auction. In addition, he asked the Community of Madrid to declare the work of Cultural Interest (BIC) so that "with this double guarantee it is ensured that the painting can stay in Spain and things are done well." The Community of Madrid has already confirmed that the work has the precautionary and provisional protection of Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).
