The Canarian Institute of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy (ICHH), dependent on the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, launches a urgent notice to the population to go to donate blood due to the significant decrease in the stock levels of groups O- and A- at the Canarian Transfusion Center.
The ICHH reminds the population that regular donations are needed from all groups, however hospital activity at this time requires these two blood groups in particular. For those who are not familiar with the principles of blood compatibility, HR-negative groups can only receive HR-negative transfusions, however they can donate to both HR-negative and positive people.
Thus, the blood group A- can donate to recipients of groups A and AB both negative and positiveHowever, you can only receive donations from your group A- and from the so-called ‘universal donor’, group O-, compatible with all blood groups And yet they can only receive donations from their own group.
The ICHH has already implemented the usual appropriate corrective measures in these cases, addressing via SMS to blood donors of both groups, registered in its databases, and reinforcing mass notices through its social networks.
Society must be aware of the essential role it plays the donation of blood for the normal functioning of the health system, as it is a unique product that cannot be manufactured rather, it depends exclusively on the generous, altruistic and responsible donation of people who meet the requirements to be donors.
On the other hand, the expiration of blood components makes it absolutely essential to maintain a constant number of donations that allows us to respond to hospital needs throughout the year.
Where to donate blood
Right now the ICHH maintains operating different temporary extraction points in Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, in addition to the fixed points available throughout the Archipelago.
