Unions call to defend decent jobs online and protect the unemployed by the pandemic

The unions call on workers on this May Day to demand with virtual demonstrations on social networks a more dignified job and protection for those who have lost it due to the pandemic.

Under the slogan “Work and public services. Another economic and social model is necessary”, the main trade union organizations, UGT and CCOO, have called for a “virtual” protest day for the first time in the history of International Labor Day, which include online demonstrations and a tribute concert.

The general secretaries of CCOO and UGT, Unai Sordo and Pepe Álvarez, will carry out a tribute act to the essential workers of this pandemic, such as those in the socio-sanitary field, people care, supermarkets, food chains, transport or cleaning, and they will deliver their speeches before starting a virtual demonstration.

Among its demands for this May Day is to extend the bonuses and unemployment protection associated with the temporary employment regulation (ERTE) files to favor the maintenance of employment after the lifting of the state of alarm.

CCOO and UGT also request the immediate implementation of a minimum vital income that allows those who have no recourse to be able to subsist at home.

CSIF faces this May Day demanding the recognition of COVID-19 as an occupational disease, as recommended by the World Health Organization, and demanding responsibilities with measures to demand compensation to professionals for the spread of coronavirus for lack of adequate protection .

With the slogan “The value of your work”, USO will reclaim the role of jobs that “previously seemed hidden or insignificant” such as social health, cleaning or transportation, while claiming “other policies” so as not to fall into old mistakes and build a stronger, more humane, prosperous and sustainable society.

CGT will carry out a protest act that will be broadcast by its television channel, ending with a concert, in which it will call to combat social inequalities and recover quality, universal and free public services, as well as companies and means of production privatized.

Also in online format, CNT will carry out a virtual meeting in which various groups and social and workers’ organizations will participate “who face the great socioeconomic difficulties that this health crisis is causing”.
