The coverage of the unemployment protection system last August was 60.9%, which means that 39.1% of unemployed people do not receive benefits, a percentage that has improved by almost two points, since last year that coverage was 59.2%.
According to the data published today by the Ministry of Labor, Migration and Social Security, the beneficiaries of unemployment benefits existing at the end of the month were 1,836,288, with a decrease compared to the same month of the previous year of 3.1%.
Of the total beneficiaries of unemployment benefits, 845,460 were recipients of the contributory benefit; 697,014, of the subsidy; 157,396, of the active insertion income; 109,278, of the subsidy of eventual agrarian and 27,140 of the extinct program of activation for employment (PAE).
Total expenditure on benefits in August reached 1,503.2 million euros, 0.4% less than the same month of the previous year.
The average monthly expenditure per beneficiary, excluding the agricultural subsidy for Andalusia and Extremadura, was 840.8 euros, which means an increase over the same month of the previous year of 23 euros.
In relation to the total of beneficiaries of unemployment benefits, foreigners represented 9.6%.
In this way, the number of foreign beneficiaries at the end of August was 175,916, 0.6% more than the same month of the previous year, an increase that was only made among the beneficiaries of EU countries (1.9%), while that those coming from outside the EU decreased (0.6%).
The beneficiaries of foreign benefits accounted for 34% of the total number of foreign job seekers.
The total number of applications for benefits throughout the country registered in August amounted to 561,487, which represents 0.2% more than the same month of the previous year, while the processing was 534,807, 1.1% less than in 2017.
