Athletic beat Eibar by 1-2 in the Basque derby that both played in Ipurua with two goals from Unai López that gave the victory to a Biscayan team that showed they had more punch than their rival.
It was a meeting that started slowly, with two teams studying each other, without taking the initiative, although in the 12th minute Yuri Berchiche with a long shot gave the locals a scare, and in the 15th Inui put the ball on a gold tray to Kike García and this one missed point-blank an excellent occasion.
A minute later it was the turn of Iñaki Willians, who was admitted and Pedro Bigas stopped the danger. Shortly after, Kike García, in the give and take that the game became, again made a mess in an unbeatable position and missed a clear ball.
Eibar forgave so much that in the 40th minute a play started by Jon Morcillo allowed Iñaki Williams to take the ball in the area where it generates the most danger and he finished with a cross to his teammate Unai López, who, in an excellent position, alone on the edge of the area, crossed the ball to the left post and scored the first goal for Athletic.
From then on and until the end of the first half, Athletic’s dominance was more noticeable, but Williams did not take advantage of an opportunity in the final moments to extend the advantage and left the locals alive.
In the second half, Mendilibar introduced two changes in their ranks to give more offensive bite to his team and they bore fruit very soon, since after a corner kick masterfully taken by Pedro León at the head of Kike Garcia, the armorer player finished off the net formidably and achieved the equalizer.
From then on the uncertainty he seized both teams, who were aware that a point was very little for what they needed in these first league measures, but the fear of losing it was greater.
Garitano opted for the entry of Villalibre, who a few minutes after entering the field gave a ball to Iñaki Williams, who scored a goal annulled for positional offside of Villalibre.
This action spurred the visitors, who returned to take over the field until in the 87th minute came the play that decided the game in a new assignment from Capa to Unai López, who returned to shoot low and placed on the left, marking 1 -2 which in the end was final.
