Two pinnacles of the Cathedral of Granada are detached by earthquakes

Two pinnacles of the Cathedral of Granada have detached from the main facade of the monument this Friday as a result of the "seismic swarm" in which the city and its entire metropolitan area are immersed. The events occurred at the edge of eight o'clock in the afternoon when they came off without warning. Fortunately, at that time no one was passing through the area and there is no regret for personal injury.

Archbishopric sources confirm eldiario.es Andalusia that the hypothesis on which they work is that the landslides have occurred because of the earthquakes that have been happening since last Saturday, several of them with magnitudes greater than 4 mbLg, which is generating concern and some anxiety among the people of Granada. Apparently, as a result of earthquakes, the pinnacles have been broken and one of them has ended up falling to the ground.

Firefighters have come quickly to cordon off the area and remove the debris that has accumulated just in front of the main door of the Cathedral. In turn, the technicians have started the revision work to ensure that no other part of the historic monument is damaged. The detailed study will continue throughout the weekend to rule out that new earthquakes could cause more landslides on the facade. At the moment, a large crane remains guarding the facade in the Plaza de las Pasiegas.

A 16th century cathedral

The Cathedral of Granada, in addition to being the seat of the local archdiocese and a place of worship in the great Catholic events of the city, is one of the most visited monuments next to the Alhambra. It dates from the 16th century and was built by order of Carlos I, son of Juana I of Castile and grandson of the Catholic Monarchs. In Renaissance style, the first sketches of the Cathedral were markedly Gothic, but Diego de Siloé's intervention gave it the image it has today.

As a curiosity, at first the construction of two large towers was planned that would end in the shape of a peak, but economic problems and the death of Alonso Cano, author of the main facade, stopped such ambition. Both structures were to measure eighty-one meters, which would have made the Cathedral one of the tallest buildings in the capital Granada.
