Trudeau alerts the US consequences if it prevents the export of masks

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau launched a veiled threat to the United States on Friday after US President Donald Trump tried to stop the 3M company from exporting medical masks to Canada.

Trudeau hinted that Canada could prevent “thousands” of Canadian healthcare professionals who cross the border every day to work in American hospitals in cities like Detroit from traveling to fulfill their duties if the White House interrupts trade in products such as N95 masks.

During his daily press conference, Trudeau said today that his country is “working closely with the United States to understand that trade between the United States and Canada flows in both directions, especially when it comes to essential goods.”

“There are thousands of healthcare workers in Windsor (Canadian border city) working every day in Detroit. And the Americans depend on them. There are medical products and other essential goods that cross the border in both directions and it would be a mistake for the two countries to limit the other’s access to essential goods and personnel, “added Trudeau.

Trump criticized and threatened this Thursday in a Twitter message to 3M, one of the world’s leading producers of consumer goods, for its exports of sanitary masks.

“Today we hit 3M hard after seeing what they are doing with the masks. Production (Defense) Law to the end. It has been a great surprise for many in the government what they were doing. They will have to pay a high price! “Trump said.

Today, 3M revealed that the White House has ordered it to stop exporting to Canada and Latin America N95 masks, considered essential to protect against COVID-19.

The company stated in a statement that the actions of the White House will have “serious humanitarian implications” and resisted complying with the order to prevent the export of masks.

3M said other countries could “retaliate and do the same, as some have already done,” over the US decision to prevent exports of vital material.

“If this happens, the net number (of N95 masks) made available to Americans will actually decrease. The opposite of what we and the administration, on behalf of the American people, want,” added the multinational.
