Garbage does not have to be the problem, it can be the solution. " This was the conclusion reached by Andrea Cerdán when she saw the mountain of waste generated by the "throwaway" consumption model. The opportunities can literally be found in the trash. Imagine that the organic waste generated each day was converted into fertilizer inside the container to which they are going to stop. The idea is close to being a reality thanks to these two entrepreneurs, the creators of Trim.

Apparently, it is a container with a peculiar design. But inside the trash becomes compost. "The process is like a digestion. We have been inspired by nature itself, "explains Cerdán. It is divided into three compartments. In the first, "the material is crushed and shaken", that is, it becomes a homogeneous mass. Then, "microorganisms are inoculated to accelerate the decomposition process. And there is a third compartment of maturation and stabilization of the material. " Naturally, this process lasts six months. "With the specific conditions we want to give, we can reduce that time."

Cerdán did not know how to shape the mechanism he had devised. Then Valentina Villagómez arrived ("thank goodness she appeared!" Exclaims her partner), the one in charge of designing the assembly of Trim.

For now, the idea has only materialized in a model the size of a botijo. The big one - it will be something bigger than a normal container - will arrive when the investment appears. "The manufacturing cost per unit would be between 4,000 and 7,000 euros," explains Villagómez. It may seem unattainable for any institution, but it should be remembered that within this device a product is generated. "Each one would generate 50,000 kilos of fertilizer and that kilo is paid at one and a half euros. Yes it compensates. With half being sold, costs would already be covered. In two years the investment could be recovered ", according to the forecasts of its creators

Only the beginning?

Organic waste is a problem, but there are worse ones. An example: the plastics that begin to invade the oceans. Therefore, Cerdán and Villagómez do not want to stay here and aspire to continue creating machines that recycle: "In the future we want to do it with plastic and cardboard. It is totally feasible. "
