Trenitalia, an efficient and experienced operator

The strong point of the Italian Renfe is that it knows what it means to have rivals

Trenitalia, the Italian Renfe, does not have a “low cost” service in the image and likeness of Ouigo. But the strong point of the Italian Renfe is that it knows what it means to have rivals, since it has been competing with the private NTV in the high-speed market of the transalpine country for seven years. The presence of this company has forced Trenitalia to reinvent itself to remain competitive in prices as well as profitable, something it is achieving. Although it has had to lower its prices to withstand the pressure of NTV, it has managed to compensate for the decrease in rates by increasing the number of travelers, which has managed to maintain its level of income. What has improved is in its costs, which has managed to reduce drastically. The company took advantage of the liberalization to agree with the unions an agreement to increase the versatility of its workers, also increasing their productivity and working hours.

On an operational level, Trenitalia, through its AVE trains, the Frecciarossa, offers four classes, from the luxurious executive, to business and premium to end the economic standard; to attract all kinds of customers and pockets. The company wants speed and reduced travel times to be the differential point with its competitors. Since 2016, it has begun to introduce new trains, the Frecciarossa 1,000 built by Bombardier-AnsaldoBreda, capable of reaching a speed of almost 400 kilometers per hour, although they are only approved to run at 360 kilometers per hour. Although these trains, also known as Zefiro, are not yet approved to operate in Spain, they do have the permits to do so in Italy and France, which will shorten the times for them to be available in Spain.

In recent years, the Italian operator has expanded its service by offering intermodal solutions for bus, car rental and shared vehicles to take customers from door to door. Its alliance with Ilsa aims to replicate this model, including the plane, given that the Spanish company is owned by the shareholders of Air Nostrum.
