TransfersThe football director of ‘You First Sports’ also values Fabián’s future
LThe agents, essential actors in the football business, do not stop because of the quarantine. Because the market continues to move. Calls, wapps, meetings in multiscreen …Álvaro Torres, director of the football section ofYou First Sports (in the world top 20), he analyzes it in this interview withBRAND, in which he also talks about the future of Fabián, one of the jewels that will generate the most fighting in the summer. “There are several important clubs that have asked about him …”
Q. How is an agent’s job now? Do you work more or less?
R.It works differently, because now there are no trips, we are traveling all day throughout the year, there are no visits to players or clubs, due to the circumstances, but we are a family agency, very close to footballers. We are in daily contact with them, permanently, also with the clubs, internally we have many calls, chats, new applications for internal meetings …
Q. Are the clubs called?
R.If I tell you about my last two days … It has not been traveling, but between Wednesday and Thursday I have spoken with the president of Cádiz, the vice president of Betis, the president of Watford, the sports director of Atlético de Madrid, Real Sociedad, Barça, Sevilla, with our players Luis Suárez (Zaragoza), Fabián, Luis Alberto, Jonny, Andone, Bernardo, with the general manager of Chelsea … In the end it is a lot of work. I’m not bored, I’m bored.
Q. So the market has not stopped.
R.We are also dealing with some open negotiations, but by telephone. The market continues, even if the transfer window is not open. We are positioning our players for the summer, conversations with clubs, the clubs tell you what ideas they have for the market, all this does flow. Open renewal negotiations that we are dealing with are also being handled. Stopping has not stopped, another thing is the uncertainty of whether to resume the League or not, when, how …
P. Because that is key to the football business, that LaLiga can be finalized.
R.It is important for LaLiga to end, but now it is risky in these circumstances to talk about a calendar when people are sick and dying from this pandemic. It is delicate. It is time to think about taking care of our health and that of the players, the club workers, the coaches. From there, in the background, I do say that it is essential for LaLiga to end for the football sector, for one basic thing. It depends on televisions, 70% of the clubs budget comes from televisions. If LaLiga ends, the TV will pay what was agreed. In addition, if it is behind closed doors they will have more audience, both televisions and sponsors. There should be no problem in that scenario so that everything is paid and there are no dismissals or layoffs. Although we go beyond June. It will be resolved how it is done with the players who end their contract on June 30, it will be necessary to find the formula to be able to extend them.
Q. How will this affect the market?
R.If the League ends this year, although it takes time to finish, I think there will be fewer sponsors and things will drop, I expect less investment next season and more savings to balance the balance. That if we can finish it. If not … the picture will be much more complicated. There will be a lot of economic uncertainty, of the investment that the clubs can make. Everything will depend on how long this lasts. And if we have learned anything, it is that everything is changing a lot. It is difficult to pronounce. Players will need good advice to protect their contracts and negotiate new ones. Affecting will affect. Recession, I don’t know. But that there is less investment and more savings in transfers, surely.
Q. Transfers up or down?
R.Strong money will be spent on top players. And another player profile will be less invested. The clubs that need to sell will sell cheaper, prices more in line with reality, and the clubs that handle more money will lower their bets. What is important is that if this is solved in 2-3 months, it should not disrupt much, in the medium term, any sector within football. Because the teles will continue to invest and the wheel will continue.
Q. How are the players at your agency?
R.Calm but concerned. Especially those who are in Italy, in the case of Fabián, Luis Alberto, Berenguer or Jony, because they have been more days, it is more time away from their family … They took their relatives from Italy due to the coronavirus and then they were caught in Spain . Above, there is talk of the start of training (for example the Naples), that I see it very far, due to the risk that this entails, I think it is very premature. The mini-season that they will have to carry out is also worrying, because they are going to go from very limited physical activity at home to training, and I hope that they are given reasonable time to avoid risk of injury, because they are not used to such a situation.
P. In You First Sports there are players who already sound for a big transfer in summer, Fabián’s case. What plans do you have for the future?
R. In the short term, it is focused on Naples. The team has undergone many changes, including Ancelotti, and is having a difficult year at a sporting level. Renewal? We have parked it for a while now until the end of the season.
Q. Do you see him in a big one?
R.If there are clubs asking about him, yes, obviously there are several important clubs that have asked about him, about his situation, that have been actively asking about him, and we have informed Naples, obviously. Today Fabián has to think about Naples and in the end it will be seen. Logically, having been the best player in the European under 21, having three very good seasons (Betis and two and Italy) and being a starter with the Spanish team leads these clubs to show interest in him. We will transfer it to Naples. And these clubs are all clear that he is a midfielder who is going to be one of the players of the decade. We all agree on that.
Q. Does it have a clause?
R.No, he does not have it. Transfer price? I really do not know.
P. Luis Alberto is also having another great season in Lazio …
R.Yes, last year was one of the best in Serie A and this year it is being the best in the Italian league, said by Italian, Spanish clubs … We are in a very good mood, speaking very actively with the club to reach an agreement for renewal.
