Three dead and a score of wounded in a fire in Badalona

Three people have died and a score have been injured, including a baby in critical condition, in a fire today in a ten-storey building on Avenida Marquès de Mont-roig in the neighborhood of Sant Roc Badalona (Barcelona).

As reported by the Fire Department of the Generalitat and the Emergency Medical System (SEM), the fire, which started shortly after nine in the morning and controlled two hours later, has affected several houses in the building and has caused the death of three neighbors, while another 19 people have been injured.

Among the injured is a baby, in critical condition, evacuated to the Hospital of Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, ​​and two adults who have suffered serious injuries to rush into the void as they fled from the flames and smoke.

One of them has been evacuated by the emergency teams to the Vall d'Hebrón Hospital, while the other remains hospitalized in the Sant Pau Hospital.

In addition, another sixteen people have been slightly injured and have been evacuated to the hospitals of Vall d'Hebron, Sant Pau, Hospital del Mar and Germans Trias i Pujol of Badalona, ​​with the exception of three of them, which have been treated 'in situ' 'by the Medical Emergency System (SEM).

The Firemen of the Generalitat have sent nine equipments to the place, where they have evacuated from the building to some neighbors by escalators.

Seven units of the Barcelona Fire Brigade have also been deployed in the area, as well as the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Local Police, which have closed traffic in the vicinity to facilitate the evacuation and extinction work.

As a preventive measure, the Firemen have evicted the blocks adjoining the building affected by the flames, located at number 244 of Marquès de Mont-roig avenue.

The fire has spread strongly through the building, from the lower floors up, causing virulent flames and thick smoke.

The warning of the fire has arrived at the emergency teams at 09:09 in the morning, while the Firemen have been able to take control of the fire at 11.13.

Professionals of the Emergency and Social Emergency Center of Barcelona have moved to the place to provide psychological care to the families of the victims and injured.

For its part, the Emergency Medical System has activated 14 land units, two logistics and its team of psychologists.

In addition, the City of Badalona has enabled a civic center to house the evacuated residents while the firemen extinguish the fire and check if the building has suffered structural damage.

Once the fire is controlled, the firefighters continue in the area to try to extinguish it permanently and to investigate its origin.
