The Bank of Spain recalled this Monday that December 31 of this year ends the term pTo exchange pesetas for euros at the agency. In a statement, he reported that anyone who wishes to make the change may do so at the Banco de España building in Madrid or at any of its branches throughout the national territory.

To facilitate the exchange operation, the organization has prepared a series of informative materials that will be distributed through its branches and collaborating entities in the campaign.

Due to the security measures recommended by the health authorities in public buildings, to carry out the exchange operation It is necessary to make an appointment in advance by calling 91 338 50 00, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., or through the form available on the website of the Bank of Spain. The interested parties will be obliged to identify themselves with their ID, passport or residence card.

Until July the equivalent of more than 1,602 million euros still had to be changed, the entity reported.

Citizens may change tAll the pesetas banknotes put into circulation from 1939, since for those issued between 1936 and 1939 it is necessary to carry out a prior analysis by the experts of the Bank of Spain.

You can also change all the coins in circulation at the time of the euro’s launch, including those of 2,000 pesetas and collection, commemorative and special coins.

All banknotes and coins will be exchanged for their face value, that is, 1 euro for every 166,386 pesetas.

97% already changed

When the euro arrived on January 1, 2002, there were 48,750 million euros worth of pesetas in circulation. Since then, 97% of that amount has been exchanged, but at the end of last July the equivalent of more than 1,602 million euros still remained to be exchanged.

To facilitate the exchange operation, the Bank of Spain has prepared a series of informative materials, such as brochures, which will be distributed through its branches and collaborating entities in the campaign, and an explanatory video.
