A butterfly This is the animal chosen by Samsung to represent in an iconic way the Galaxy Fold. It is the first folding phone of the Korean brand and, like a butterfly beats its wings, the big screen of this smartphone It can be folded in half and redeployed again and again. The Fold works like a hybrid with two screens. When it's open, it's like a small 7.3-inch tablet. When closed, it can be used as a folded mobile with an external screen of 4.6 inches.
It is not the first flexible phone in the market. Like Samsung, several companies have been working on the concept for years. Royole has launched its flexible FlexPai smartphone and Huawei plans to release its mobile phone with folding screen Mate X in mid 2019. But the Galaxy Fold is the first phone that doubles from Samsung, one of the technological giants with more sales in the market. So far, only the device had been seen in display cases at events such as the world mobile conference, which took place in Barcelona last February. Now EL PAÍS has been able to have a first contact with the mobile phone in a trip to London to which it has been invited by Samsung.
When the device is closed, it seems that it is two mobiles – one on top of another – linked with a hinge. It is longer than a traditional phone and much wider. It is designed to be stored in a pocket. But, because of its height, it would stick out in tight jeans. With this format, it is more convenient to use it with only one hand. It can be useful to send messages, answer a call, tweet, make a quick query on the Internet or play a song on Spotify.
But when it comes to going further, the 4.6-inch screen stays small. The terminal, which will be available for booking as of April 26 and will go on sale on May 3 in Spain, opens with two hands as a book or a laptop. Doing so does not give the feeling that the device is fragile or will break. Only a small click sounds. And the mobile is transformed into a kind of tablet in which everything is seen in large dimensions. Instagram photos occupy the large 7.3-inch screen and becomes an ideal device to watch a movie, read the newspaper or try a video game. However, there is a small vertical line on the screen just where the terminal is folded.
The external main screen is Superamoled with HD + resolution. The largest one, located inside, is Dynamic Amoled, with QXGA + resolution. 3. This last screen is folded thanks to a layer of polymer and that is approximately 50% thinner than the typical screen of a smartphone. The company says that the terminal is designed to be opened and closed without any problem at least 200,000 times. Each user unlocks the phone about 100 times a day, according to estimates an employee of the company: "The phone, therefore, would last about five years." When opening the Galaxy Fold, it highlights what the Korean company calls applications continuity. This is the smartphone's ability to launch the same app from the small screen to the large one. This feature works well with Google applications like the calendar or Google Maps.
Up to three applications at a time
On the large screen it is possible to display up to three applications at the same time. The user can, for example, watch a video on YouTube, while searching for information about it on Google and share impressions with a friend on WhatsApp. All in the same screen. Although there are some apps like Instagram that, for the moment, are not designed to be opened with this format.
In addition, the Galaxy Fold will only be available to some users. Its price is quite high. In the United States it will cost $ 1,980 and in Spain it will be worth around 2,000 euros. The company has not yet specified the exact price nor the sales and distribution channels in the country. The colors that can be purchased are silver (Space Silver), black (Cosmos Black), green (Martian Green) and blue (Astro Blue). The hinge that allows the mobile to bend can be silver or gold.
The phone has two batteries that together reach 4,380 mAh, a powerful 7nm processor, and six cameras (three rear, two front, and one in the outer cover for when folded). On the side of the screen it includes, in addition to the unlocking and volume adjustment buttons, the fingerprint reader. It does not have a headphone jack (minijack), so they will have to be wireless – Samsung will include the Galaxy Buds in the mobile phone case – and can become a wireless charger that feeds both other mobile phones and wearables compatible with that standard. of loading (Qi certification). Just activate the charger function and place the other device on the back of the Galaxy Fold.
