“They want to go back to the village”

The employers of Madrid and Catalonia remember that eliminating connections between the two capitals “damages the economy and creates unemployment”

Entrepreneurs believe that the airlift is positive for users and their pockets. In this regard, they point out that the fact that there are “many transport systems between the two cities such as the bus, the AVE, the plane and the car is a mechanism of free competition that guarantees the proper functioning of these services and also the price. The consumer can decide based on the price ».

The Barcelona-Madrid air bridge, which falls within the quota of routes that the Barcelona City Council proposes to eliminate from El Prat by having a rail alternative, would mean the loss of some 2.4 million air places. Specifically, in 2018, 2.46 million people traveled between the Catalan capital and Madrid using the airlift, some 200,000 per month, which represents 4.9% of total traffic during that year. The AVE between the two capitals transported 4.2 million passengers in 2018, almost double that of the plane. In 2019, in the absence of December data, the Barcelona-Madrid connection has transported 2.36 million passengers. For both airports, the airlift involves the route with more passengers as a stopover airport.
