They present a book about Torcuato Fernández-Miranda and the Spanish transition

The Spanish journalist Juan Fernandez Miranda, head of political section of the newspaper ABC, presented today, for the first time in America, "The scriptwriter of the transition" (2015), a biography of his great-uncle Torcuato Fernández-Miranda that deals with his role in the change from dictatorship to democracy in Spain.

The presentation was made at the Cultural Center of Spain in Panama-Casa del Soldado, within the framework of a program of activities related to the 40th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, in which, in addition to Fernández, the Spanish journalist and sociologist Álvaro participated Grandson and Narciso Michavila.

The author of the publication told Efe that he addressed this story "as a journalist and family member of the protagonist of the book, which is Torcuato Fernández-Miranda".

He stressed that "as a political journalist I have practiced this profession throughout my life, I believe that I met the conditions to do a good political analysis of the work of Torcuato Fernández-Miranda in the Spanish transition."

The book, he added, is a "complete biography" of his great-uncle's life since he was born in 1915, in Gijón, northern Spain, until he died in London in 1980 shortly after the transition.

"And what it reveals is how a person trained in law, Professor of Political Law, Constitutional Law, knew how to understand the history of Spain, knew how to find the legal formula that King Juan Carlos urged so that the Franco regime would renounce its power and Spain would undertake a process of integration of the left, until then in exile, "he said.

He added that it is the first time that the book is presented outside of Spain and that it was chosen to do it in Panama "within the framework of the conferences we are celebrating over the 40 years of the Spanish constitution."

"We thought it was a good opportunity to address the Spanish transition from the perspective of a specific person, who is neither more nor less than the person of maximum confidence of Don Juan Carlos" in that process of change, he said.

Torcuato Fernández-Miranda (1915-1980), politician and jurist, is considered a strategist of the process of transition to democracy in Spain, which was forged in the last years of the Franco regime.

The process of changing a dictatorship into democracy began with the granting of an amnesty, legalization of political parties, the celebration, in 1977, of the first democratic elections and the drafting in 1978 of a Constitution that is now 40 years old.
