The town of Hormigos (Toledo) has only 823 inhabitants and its economy is based on the cultivation of vines and livestock. However, some of his neighbors were recently engaged in more lucrative albeit illegal activities: marijuana cultivation.

The Civil Guard has arrested 19 of them as part of the 'Hormiguero Verde' operation for belonging to a gang dedicated to drug trafficking. Specifically, they owned marijuana plantations in nine homes in this town, eight of which they had occupied illegally. 10,311 marijuana plants in an advanced state of growth have been intervened, as well as two long firearms -one of which had been stolen in the Community of Madrid-, logistical material dedicated to the cultivation of drugs worth 400,000 euros and 1,000 euros in metalic.

Five of the houses were located in the urban area of this small town and the other four in an urbanization on the outskirts of the town. Some of them had sophisticated security devices in order to protect the plantations from possible «overturns» -robberies between gangs of traffickers» and were protected by potentially dangerous dogs.

armored plantations

In one of these houses, the marijuana plantation was hidden in a basement that was accessed through a small hole of one square meter in a wall of an outbuilding on the ground floor. In another of the homes, access to the plantation was through an armored door at the back of the house, at ground level, through a hidden trapdoor in a room. A third dwelling had an armored door with an opening direction opposite to that of the residence itself, which made access to the interior difficult. The 19 detainees, 13 men and 6 women, aged between 26 and 45, have been brought before the Investigating Court of Torrijos (Toledo) for the crimes of drug cultivation and processing, belonging to a criminal group, fluid fraud electricity, occupation of property without authorization and illegal possession of weapons.
