Security forces of the state of Guanajuato, in central Mexico, with the support of Navy agents, arrested 35 suspected members of the cartels who dispute the control of the sale of drugs in central Mexico, reported Friday authorities.
These are criminals linked to the Jaliso Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa Cartel in Lima and, according to the authorities, the confrontation between the two organizations has caused a significant increase in the number of murders in Guanajuato in recent months.
With 3,540 murders recorded in the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), Guanajuato closed 2019 as the most violent entity in the country.
In a press conference, the State Attorney General, Carlos Zamarripa Aguirre, explained that state agents surprised on Wednesday 22 at night in the municipality of Cortazar to 29 people dedicated to the sale of drugs.
“There was a meeting between various drug dealers and distributors in the area,” said Zamarripa, who added that the detainees were made available to the Federal Public Ministry along with a significant amount of insured drugs.
That same day, in another operation in the San Miguel Octopan community, belonging to the municipality of Celaya, agents of the State Public Security Forces (FSPE) and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), with support from the Navy, rescued three people who had been kidnapped and were being forced by a criminal group to commit illegal activities.
In this action, explained the Attorney General, federal and state forces arrested six people who will face charges of kidnapping and carrying firearms for the exclusive use of the Army.
Zamarripa added that the two leaders of this criminal cell are of Colombian origin.
The authorities did not detail to which criminal organization the detainees in Cortazar and San Miguel Octopan belong, but reiterated that they belong to rival criminal groups.
These arrests add up to 24 more arrests carried out in operations on Tuesday, January 11 and Friday, 13. In total, in a couple of weeks federal and state forces have arrested 59 people linked to the CJNG criminal groups and the cartel Santa Rosa de Lima.
According to Zamarripa, a significant percentage of these detainees are from Sinaloa, Guerrero and Jalisco.
Separately, the Secretary of Public Security of the State, Alvar Cabeza de Vaca, told the media that since September 26, 2018, when the current state administration began, law enforcement has arrested 282 members of the Santa Rosa Cartel of Lima and 222 of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
