These are the measures that each supermarket has taken so that purchases are made safely



Spanish supermarkets assured from the first day of severe measures against the coronavirus – since that Monday, March 9, when the Community of Madrid announced the closure of schools – that the supply was guaranteed. They had to go out and explain it in the face of the avalanches that occurred not only that day, but also the following: partly due to the sudden change in habits of the people, who now have to eat and eat at home, and partly due to the contagion of hysteria through social networks.

Since then, all the chains have announced measures to strengthen security and avoid the possibility of contagion. These are the ones each one has taken.

Mercadona

Store managers and private security agents will control the capacity of each supermarket, established to guarantee a preventive distance of one meter between people. When the capacity is full, new clients will not be allowed to enter while others do not leave.

The Valencian chain recommends that only one person go to make the purchase, that those who are a risk group do not attend, that visits be spaced (do not go at the opening time to be able to attend to everyone) and that they are not stored products unnecessarily. Internally, “all daily disinfection and cleaning processes have been reinforced.” And the workers have been provided with the necessary hygiene utensils.

Online purchase is suspended until they have free delivery tranches.

Hours: 9 am to 8 pm, although “it will adapt to changing circumstances”.

Carrefour

The online purchase of Carrefour does work, but the company gives delivery priority to people over 65, with reduced mobility or with disabilities. Also those over 65 have preference to buy first thing in the morning, from 9 to 10.

The chain also recommends paying by card, going one by one and buying only what is necessary. It has installed signs and lines on the ground to keep the distance of one meter and has increased the cleaning of cars and baskets.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., including those that usually provide 24-hour service.

Day

Dia group supermarkets are reinforcing teams and have several ATM vacancies open, replenishers and auxiliaries in different parts of Spain. Employees must compulsorily use vinyl gloves and disinfecting gels, while hygiene recommendations for clients are given over the public address system.

Dia also guarantees the safety distance of one meter in stores and warns that it could affect the capacity of these. The supermarket recommends avoiding compulsive shopping and paying by card instead of cash.

Online trading remains open and available to everyone. The delivery people leave the order at the door to avoid contagions.

Hours: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Eroski Group

To avoid the lack of assortment, the Eroski Group stores will limit the number of sales units per person, although the chain does not explain what products it affects. They do acknowledge that “we are registering very relevant peaks in demand for certain products” and that they have increased the production capacity of the platforms to try to replace them as soon as possible.

The company has strengthened the cleaning service in stores and claims to have started to install protection screens on the boxes to protect cashiers. Your workers will avoid bagging for safety.

Lidl

The German group calls its customers to buy only what they need and apply basic hygiene measures when they make the purchase. It has limited the capacity to 50 people to guarantee the distance of one meter and only allows one person per family unit to enter. To do this, they reinforce the presence of private security in their stores.

Measures include disinfecting surfaces most exposed to contact, reminding that gloves are mandatory in bulk purchase areas, and temporarily suspending returns.

Online shopping is still available, with no indication of delays.

Hours: from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Auchan Group (Alcampo)

Due to the high demand for online orders, the group warns that the service may be limited and take time, although it remembers that it can be done online and picked up in store.

For workers, Auchan provides accessible hydroalcoholic gloves and gels in all common areas, warehouses and exit boxes. It has also reinforced the cleaning service in stores, cars and baskets. As additional protection, Auchan has started the installation of methacrylate screens on the boxes.

The capacity is limited to guarantee the distance of one meter.

Hours: from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in hypermarkets, until 8 p.m. on Sundays and holidays, and from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. in supermarkets.

Supercor (El Corte Inglés)

Access to shopping centers will be carried out individually, not in groups, and minimum safety distances will be maintained. If necessary, customers will have to wait on the street to avoid crowds. The company has reinforced the cleaning and disinfection of all the stores and their contact elements and suggests its customers to use green gloves to make the purchase. Likewise, it recommends them to use the online shopping and store pickup service.
