There will not be a brexit without agreement because it would be catastrophic

The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, was convinced that there will be an agreement with the United Kingdom "in the coming weeks" for his departure from the EU, because a disorderly "brexit" would be catastrophic.

"We will have an agreement with our British friends, this agreement will be closed in the coming weeks," Juncker said in an interview broadcast today by the channel "France 24".

He was confident that this commitment will be reached "because it has to be done" and "because a disorderly exit would be catastrophic".

He explained that taking into account that the abandonment of the EU by the United Kingdom is already "a tragedy", "we are not going to add new tragic moments".

Asked by the controversy generated by the criticism of US President Donald Trump, his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, for his willingness to set up a European army so as not to depend on the United States, Juncker was conciliatory.

The head of the community executive said he hoped that one day there will be a European army, but insisted that it will work in collaboration with NATO, and that it will not do so either against or under the direction of the United States.

Juncker attended today the events of the centenary of the armistice of the First World War in Paris, where were present nearly 70 heads of State and Government, including Macron and Trump.
