A vision of Lutheranism as close as possible to historical reality. With this premise presents the Casa de Colón the exhibition Martin Luther and his world. A project that reaches the capital of Gran Canaria with the help of the Isabela Foundation, Canary Government and the Americanist center of Vegueta, curated by the professor Elvira Roca Barea – author of the essay Imperiofobia and black legend (2016) -, which shies away from any religious reading, as would be usual in the fifth centenary of the founding act of the so-called Reformation, which was completed in October 2017, in favor of "a path as faithful as possible to the historical reality of those years and the life and work of Martin Luther. "

The exhibition that occupies three of the halls of the Casa de Colón is articulated around Martin Luther (1483-1546) in 15 sections through 70 high-quality reproductions from posters, engravings, flyers and other materials of the time of Luther from various museums and European and American institutions. Pieces of the British Museum, of the public libraries of Munich and Berlin, of the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam, of the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia, and of private collections, among other origins.

"The exhibition was conceived on the occasion of the 500 years of the alleged nailing on the doors of the Church of All Saints of Wittenberg of the 95 theses of Martin Luther, which is the origin of the Lutheran schism, called by them the Reformation, and assumed with that name also by the own catholicism ", explained Óscar Bermejo yesterday, representative of the Isabela Foundation, in an act in which they participated the general director of Cultural Promotion of the canary Government, Aurora Moreno; the insular counselor and the general director of Culture, Carlos Ruiz and Oswaldo Guerra; and the director of the Casa de Colón, Elena Acosta.

According to Óscar Bermejo, who served yesterday as a driver in a visit to the three exhibition rooms hours before its inauguration, in the absence of the curator Elvira Roca Barea, "this exhibition aims to be a response to the hagiographies that have been made about Luther in Germany trying to reestablish the truth, the facts as they were and to show that there have been many lies related to Luther, and what Lutheranism supposed in Germany and in Europe. " As the curator correctly points out in the texts that accompany the exhibition, "Protestantism was a political problem that was expressed through religion." And in the case of Germany, it is "the first manifestation of Germanic nationalism".

Three scales

Martin Luther and his world It proposes a tour in three scales, which are the three halls enabled for the exhibition that commemorates the 500th anniversary of the publication of Questioning the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences. In the first, the visitor discovers Luther in the context of German humanism, which leads to "the Lutheran epiphany" with the 95 theses in the Church of Wittenberg; the war of the peasants and their relationship with the princes of Saxony; and the house-convent enjoyed by the protagonist, as well as the propaganda machine of his ideals.

Luther and the darkness, the lawsuits with Erasmus of Rotterdam and Tomás Moro and the pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, are the motifs of other theaters, in a journey that concludes in a third space where anti-Semitism, biblical translations are explored, "religious freedom", polygamy and witches. To place Luther in the speech of this exhibition, Óscar Bermejo spoke of the economic crisis that broke out a decade ago and how Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain were "the gandule countries, the south that is always dirty", according to his words.
