The president of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald Lauder, celebrated on Monday the American designation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group, the first time the US denominates in this way the military of another country.
In a statement, Lauder celebrated the "courageous and unparalleled" step President Donald Trump took Monday "calling terrorism by its name and making it clear to the world that the ideology of Iranian violence and oppression will not be tolerated in any way. the United States".
"This unprecedented step (…) recognizes the reality that Iran is not only a state sponsor of terrorism, but also that the IRGC (Participation of the Revolutionary Guard), participates, finances and promotes terrorism as a tool state, "Trump said in a statement.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard, created after the triumph of the Islamic Revolution of 1979 to protect the new theocratic system, is the most powerful military organization in Iran and controls large economic sectors of the country.
"The moral leadership that the United States shows today should be emulated by all the defenders of democracy, justice and humanity," Lauder insisted.
For him, it is "inconceivable that the same international community that calls Al-Qaeda and Islamic State as terrorist organizations, close their eyes to the real and present danger that Iran poses, and its agents like Hezbollah throughout the world."
The World Jewish Congress considers Iran "one of the greatest threats to the world" and especially to Jewish communities, as it funds "terrorism and international crimes across continents."
"(Iran) has in its possession the key to some of the deadliest weapons known to man, with the declared intention of destroying the Jewish state and its nemesis in the West," added the official, who encouraged the international community to follow the step taken by Trump.
