On October 11, 2018, the Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Equality updated statistics on gender violence in Spain. So far this year, 42,077 women are listed as victims of sexist violence, 40 of whom have died at the hands of their partners, increasing the number of fatalities to 966 since 2003.

Gender violence is a reality that covers all aspects of who lives it. In this situation, employment is a fundamental aspect to normalize the lives of these women. "Having an income is vital, because no matter how much you work in a social way in the empowerment, if you do not have the economic factor you can not move forward," he stresses. In the same line, from the Observatory of Equality and Employment of the Women Foundation it is indicated that "the economic dependence of the women of their abuser is the factor that favors the chronicle of situations of gender violence".

Ability to change their lives

Pilar García, therapist of Avanza Psicología, has promoted from her cabinet a project to promote the inclusion of victims of sexist violence and social exclusion in companies, believes that "like many companies have an environmental line and other initiatives of responsibility Corporate Social, should face this great need of women ». He adds that "to be incorporated into the labor market or to keep their job they need to be very qualified, since the market is very competitive, but also when they live this situation they must know how to reinvent themselves, have the ability to change their life". «It is possible that companies think that hiring a person in this situation can be complicated, but the truth is that there are people who are dedicated to giving this kind of options, accompanying companies and guiding them if they are not prepared for it» , says Garcia. However, the first step for this is not the access of women in a unique and immediate way to employment, but they should also go through a therapeutic process to improve their self-esteem. "Consolidating a job is the result of a previous personal development around the world, and with them you have to focus on attitude and confidence, because to preserve this new way of life will not only report economic independence, but also new links social, "he explains.

The Government Delegation for Gender Violence launched in 2012 the initiative "Companies for a society free of gender violence", whose objective is to take advantage of the potential of companies as agents of social awareness. Currently there are 129 public and private entities, from different sectors of the Spanish economy, attached to the initiative. In spite of this, from the Observatory of Equality and Employment of the Fundación Mujeres they warn that there are even collective agreements and labor agreements that "have conceptualized violence against women and that represent an obstacle to the application even of legal obligations in this matter for companies ». For this reason, this Observatory indicates that companies must establish their own protocols. "They have to be proactive in complying with the labor rights of the victims and, as far as possible, improve them through working conditions."

It is possible that companies can detect cases of this type of violence in some workers, so "it is necessary to have internal prevention mechanisms and own procedures that depend directly from the Human Resources department, as in cases of harassment, so that women who are going through this situation know that they can count on the support of their company, which must always ensure maximum discretion to avoid revictimization of women in their work environment. Another important aspect is the work of the entities in social awareness. "It is a good idea to incorporate, within the framework of internal training programs, modules that address the basic aspects of violence against women as one of the basic contents of the prevention of occupational risks related to psychosocial factors, although better than we can do both companies and the whole society is to work so that every woman in this situation can recover her life and stop being a victim as soon as possible, "they assert from the Observatory.

Aid to women and companies

Conscious of this problem, companies are incorporating multiple actions through which they involve their staff, clients and citizens to promote awareness and welfare of victims of gender violence. In addition, the socio-labor insertion program for these women includes measures such as the creation of an individualized insertion itinerary carried out by specialized personnel. Various training programs are also carried out to favor their insertion or permanence in the labor market. On the other hand, there are incentives to encourage the start of a new activity on their own and aid for companies that hire victims of sexist violence. In the event that women need to change their autonomous community, there are also incentives to facilitate geographical mobility.
