The voice of the animals


A book on animal ethics for teenagers. Because it is just at that age when we begin to question the world around us and many of the ethical dilemmas arise that will condition our way of being and of relating to others, also with animals. From there arises The voice of the animals, an essay aimed at young audiences, written together with Diego J. Hernández, illustrated by Sara Ramirez and published by Various Editions.

By profession, Secondary and Public teachers, when Diego and I began to work in Education, we realized that in the educational system, animals are not discussed as individuals. In subjects such as Geography and History or Biology and Geology, animals are discussed, but always as resources for the human being or from an anatomical and taxonomic point of view. The interests of animals are never discussed and less is reflected on whether the way in which we relate to them is appropriate.

From this concern would arise in 2010 Animal classroom, the first education project based on respect for animals that had among its axes the training of teachers in matters of animal ethics and education, talks in educational centers and, ultimately, being a forum for teaching materials and resources to which they could appeal to other teachers interested in the issue.

The voice of the animals It is the result of a trajectory linked to the world of education and the animal rights movement, which began with Aula Animal and which during this time appreciated the lack of literature on the subject aimed at adolescents, since we usually find children's stories or essays for adults. That is why it seemed interesting to us to write this little essay putting ourselves in the place of people of that age, their concerns, the questions they ask us in the classroom, and give them an answer to the most common topics in order to promote their thinking critical.

Throughout the essay we focus on more specific aspects such as the lives of animals in captivity, animal intelligence or the problems they also suffer in their lives in nature. Some of the most common dilemmas arise: why do we respect some animals and not others? Why do we often care more about animals based on their physical appearance? Should we help animals that live in nature? The book also includes a series of didactic proposals to be used as an educational resource in the classroom in subjects such as Ethics or Philosophy, Biology or Geology, or also in Ethical Values.

We are at a time when young people are increasingly interested and involved in various causes of social justice. We have seen it with issues such as racism or especially with feminism in recent years. Discrimination against animals does not go unnoticed, and there is increasing awareness of the situations of mistreatment suffered by animals because journalistic investigations or street activism campaigns come to light.

In addition, in general, it is usually young people who are more involved in the defense of animals, so it is necessary to read, train and reflect on animal ethics in a calm and documented way before information on social networks that is often superficial.
