The number of travelers who opted to use the airplane to move around the interior of the country increased by 8.8% in August compared to the same month in 2017, while those who chose the AVE trains rose by 3.7%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) published this Monday. In air transport, the increase of 21.5% in inter-island flights stands out, of 8.2% between the Peninsula and the rest of the territory and 5.2% within the Peninsula.
Specifically, more than 3.9 million users used air transport in the eighth month of the year, higher than those who chose the Long Distance train for their trips, with 2.79 million. Within this segment, travelers who used the AVE totaled 1.6 million users.
Rail transport was used by 39.3 million passengers, 5.1% more than in August 2017, of which 34.1 million corresponded to Cercanías users, which is 5.5% more; 2.4 million in Media Distancia, which represents an increase of 1.9% and 2.79 million in Long Distance, 3.2% more. Maritime transport (cabotage) rose by 0.5% year-on-year in August, with 1.6 million passengers.
Bus transport was used by 51.6 million passengers in August, a figure 2.1% higher than in the same month of 2017. Users of commuter trains grew 1.4%, while medium-distance commuters They rebounded 4.1%, while travelers who chose to take the bus for long distance journeys were reduced by 3.2%.
Overall, the number of interurban transport passengers increased by 3.5% in August, to 96.5 million passengers.
Special and discretionary transport grew by 8.2% in August, to 22.3 million users. The number of special transport passengers increased by 4.3%, to 5.2 million. Within the special transport, the school increased by 8.9% and the work, by 4.2%. On the other hand, discretionary transport grew by 9.5%, exceeding 17 million passengers.
2.3% of travelers for urban transport
In total, the number of travelers who used public transport in August was 301.7 million, 2.3% more than in the same month of 2017.
In monthly rate (August on July), users of public transport fell by 19.9% in the eighth month of the year, its biggest fall in a month of August since 2015.
Urban transport increases 1%
For its part, urban transport grew 1% in August compared to the same month in 2017, to 182.8 million passengers, with an increase of 2.2% for metro users, compared to the rise of 0, 3% of urban transport by bus.
In the case of the metro, the greatest increase was registered in Palma, with an increase of 41%, followed by Seville, which represents 14.2%, Valencia, 9.7% more and Malaga, with 7.2%. . The only decrease was experienced by Madrid, with 0.9% less.
For its part, the largest increases in urban transport by bus occurred in Barcelona, 3.2% more and Valencia, with 2.6% and the only decreases were recorded in Madrid, with 8.8% meos and Seville , with a decrease of 1.1%.
