The number of passengers on domestic flights in Spain grew by 5.3% in May compared to the same month in 2018, until reaching 3.7 million passengers, while the use of the AVE rose by 4.3% , exceeding 2 million users.
The peninsular flights registered more than 1.5 million passengers in May, an increase of 5.3%; those that connect the peninsula with the rest of the territory, 1.6 million, 6.1% more, and the inter-island, 488,000, an increase of 2.4%.
So far this year, domestic air transport accumulates a growth of 6.7%, while the AVE, one of 4%.
During the fifth month of the year, more than 465.1 million passengers used public transport, 3.7% more than a year before, according to data released Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The variation rate of the number of public transport passengers in May compared to April was 10.2%, the second highest in the last five years (in 2017 it was 15.3%).
Of the total passengers in May, 125.8 million used interurban transport, 4.3% more, and 279.3 million, the urban one, an increase of 2.9%, with respect to the same month of 2018.
By type of interurban transport, the bus grew by 6.2%, the plane by 5.3%; the train, 2.3%, and the ship, 0.5%.
The long distance routes registered 4% more passengers in the transport by bus, and 1.8% more in the railroad, where, compared to the increase of the AVE, there was a decrease of 2.3% in the conventional trains .
The transport of Cercanías went up a 6.7% in the displacements by bus and 2,3% in the carried out in train, whereas the average distance advanced a 4.9% in the first way and 2,9% in the second.
In terms of urban transport, the number of users of the metro increased by 0.3% in annual terms, with the Seville one standing out, with a rise of 34.4%, while that of Madrid suffered a fall of 1.3%.
Urban transport by bus increased by 4.7%, with positive rates in all the autonomous communities, while the number of users of special and discretionary transport exceeded 59.9 million, 6.1% more.
