The US Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today informed that it inspected by surprise the largest manufacturer of electronic cigarettes in the country and seized more than a thousand pages of documents.
In a statement released today, the agency responsible for public health of the government led by Donald Trump reported that the inspection at the headquarters of Juul Labs in San Francisco (California, USA) took place last Friday.
A few weeks earlier, in early September, the FDA had warned that the consumption of electronic cigarettes among adolescents has reached "an epidemic proportion" in the United States. and had announced various measures to limit access.
According to several market studies carried out by organizations such as Nielsen or Wells Fargo, Juul Labs is by far the largest manufacturer of electronic cigarettes in the country, with a market share of around 70%.
During the inspection, the government agency seized more than a thousand pages of Juul Labs documents that, among other things, refer to the sales and marketing practices of the Californian company.
"We are committed to preventing the use (of electronic cigarettes) by minors, we want to collaborate with the FDA, lawmakers, and all those involved in public health so that Juul does not fall into the hands of young people," he said. the company when the news of the inspection becomes public.
In September, the federal agency gave 60 days to the five leading producers of electronic cigarettes – Juul, Vuse, MarkTen XL, Blu and Logic 60 – to present "solid" proposals aimed at preventing the consumption of electronic cigarettes among young people.
If these plans do not materialize, the FDA will prohibit the sale of this type of cigarettes, according to the announcement.
According to the latest survey on Tobacco Youth Consumption of 2017, almost 12% of high school students, more than two million young people, consume electronic cigarettes, devices that use batteries to heat liquid nicotine until it is converted into inhalable vapor.
Some of them, as is the case of Juul Labs, have special flavors such as mango and cucumber to make their consumption more attractive.
