The unemployment rate climbs to 16.2% after adding 355,000 unemployed in the third quarter



The job market is still not soaring in a summer campaign marked by outbreaks of coronavirus and restrictions. In addition, the unemployment and employment figures continue to deteriorate due to the mismanagement of the pandemic when compared with the numbers registered at the end of September last year. He number of unemployed grew by 355,000 people in the third quarter of 2020 compared to the second and the unemployment rate rose almost one point, to 16.26%, levels not seen since the first quarter of 2018.

The Active Population Survey (EPA) prepared by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reveals that the total number of unemployed stood at 3,722,900 people from July to September and that in the last year, unemployment increased by 508,500 people as on the same dates last year there were a total of 3,214,000 unemployed in Spain.

Unemployment grew during the third quarter in all age groups and registered the largest increase among people aged 25 to 54 years with 205,200 more unemployed. Other A worrying fact is that which refers to unemployment among those under 25 years of age, since it increased in the third quarter by 112,000 people, to a total of 622,400 people, with a youth unemployment rate shot up to 40.45% of the workforce.

By areas of activity, unemployment increased in agriculture (39,700 more unemployed) and in services (21,300), while it decreased in industry (-31,800) and in construction (-12,300).

Occupancy increase

On the affiliation side, employment increased by 569,600 people in the third quarter compared to the second -when the labor market collapsed due to confinement-, with a growth rate of 3.06%, and placed the total figure at 19,176,900 people thanks to the summer campaign and despite the restrictions. However, these seemingly “good” data can be misleading: Those affected by a Temporary Employment Regulation File (ERTE) are also included among the employed. And within this section It should be remembered that 728,909 workers were still inside an ERTE at the end of September, based on data from the Ministry of Labor.

The annual comparison figures still reflect the economic mismanagement of the pandemic and the impact of economic and mobility restrictions with the destruction of a total of 697,500 jobs in the last year since last year there were 19,874,300 people employed.

By sectors, employment increased this quarter in services (476,300 more people), construction (80,300) and in industry (45,400), while it fell in agriculture (32,300 less) .In the last year, employment decreased in all sectors: services (-533,600), industry (-128,100), construction (-20,600) and agriculture (-15,200).

The largest increases in employment this quarter occurred in Catalonia, the Valencian Community and Andalusia; while the biggest increases in unemployment were for Madrid and Catalonia.

The EPA also finds that teleworking is maintained, although its implantation begins to decline with 10.30% of those employed (1,975,100) carrying out their activity from their own homes more than half of the days compared to 16.20% in the second quarter.

The number of assets grew in the third quarter by 924,600 people, 4.2% more than the previous quarter. “The end of the confinement in June is normalizing the behavior of the active population, recovering the number of active and decreasing, therefore, the number of people who are out of the labor market,” reports Statistics.
