The Contrastes trio consists of three young 'millennials': the pianist Isaac Martínez, the cellist David Rodríguez and the clarinetist Javier Mederos. Today, these three virtuosos offer a concert at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium that includes works by Beethoven, Brahms and the Canarian Laura Vega.

The Contrastes Trio acts today in the Chamber of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. Isaac Martínez, on piano, Javier Mederos, on clarinet and David Rodríguez, on cello, are three young people from Gran Canaria who demonstrate that youth is very much in accordance with virtuosity and classical music. They will perform a program with works by Beethoven, Brahms and the Canarian composer Laura Vega.

Chamber music is a tough discipline. However, Isaac Martinez, 19, says his goal for several years has been to dedicate himself to it. "The only disadvantage lies in the difficulty of working in a group, you have to learn to understand each other, it is as if you had a relationship where there are tense moments that should be taken with humor and then calm down. of other musicians with other ideas, another way of seeing music and art and thus get out of your scheme ".

At some point these three young people will have the opportunity to play in one of the great international halls. In this case, Javier Mederos, 25, would choose a concert for two instruments. "There is one of Bruch for viola, clarinet and orchestra that is a marvel, my favorite concert, I would play it in theaters like the Philharmonie in Berlin". David Rodríguez, 19, for his part, would choose the Elgar concert or the Dvorak concert. Martínez points out that his composers and favorite works vary according to times in his life, "but for the last two weeks I have been inspired by the 3rd Piano Concerto by Rachmaninov." The room is clear to me because I have already been in it and it has great acoustics. , the Philharmonie of Hamburg, where you are like in a shell. "

If they had to perform a solo recital, the clarinetist explains that he has been assembling a Bach repertoire for some time, "something that is not usually seen much because this composer is Baroque and does not have original works for my instrument". In case of having to perform a concert together, the trio of Brahms for clarinet, cello and piano would be indispensable.

In chamber music all performers acquire the same importance, but there is always a leader. Mederos points out that "in our case it varies according to what each one contributes to depending on the day, each one has a mission in our trio and we are happy with that balance." Isaac and I often contribute similar ideas, because we think in a very similar way musically, which can be a bit crazy, David comes in to cool the situation and not accept those proposals. " "Many times we do not even have to share our ideas, they go out alone by intuition and by getting to know each other more and more The more we play together, the more we know what the partner is going to do", explains Martínez.

The young pianist is also a violinist. "I have been focused on the piano for a long time, but playing the violin helps me to know the possibilities of other instruments, for example, pianists when they have to play chamber music, many times they do not know how far a string instrument can reach. They are the most frequent in these concerts, I know it and it will help me to work in the sector with criteria ". According to Mederos, "it is usually quite common for musicians to obtain a complementary training of three instruments to understand the possibilities and shortcomings of each one." A vientista does not usually have knowledge of string and vice versa, with the formation of Isaac, you can understand others musicians ". "In any case, to ignore the possibilities of other instruments sometimes allows the range of them to be broadened more, so that the musician strives more to extract new things," adds Martínez.

International training

The three have been trained in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, but they carry out, in some cases, their improvement at an international level. The pianist, for example, studies at the Hamburg Higher School. "It is not because you have a degree or because you are in a more prestigious center that you are going to go further, it depends on the path you take throughout your life." It is true that in the German city many new possibilities have been opened to me, but there are pros and cons: You have to take advantage of the opportunities and living in a town you could also aspire to the same thing. " Rodríguez is trying to take courses outside the Canary Islands. "This year I made the one in Rascafría where I had world-class teachers, like Fernando Arias or Beatriz Blanco." Mederos says that in Spain there is currently a very high level of teaching staff. "You do not have to travel outside, anyway, I studied in Berlin one year and another in Düsseldorf, I also went through Holland, and in the end you realize that the important thing is to be happy and happy whether in Spain or not."

As for the favorite authors and the works that have marked them spiritually, Martínez says that "at certain moments I feel more akin to a composer and in others, I change tastes. I have a relationship with her, and for a whole year I was accompanied by Chopin's ballad in G minor, with whom I do not feel great affinity, but with this music I lived important experiences in my life, but one composer I always keep in mind is Schumann " In this sense, the cellist David Rodríguez affirms that he has a predilection for Bach's suites. "Each one is in a different tone and as they advance, the technical difficulty increases, so far I have played the first three and I work the fourth one, they require a lot of effort". The clarinetist adds that the work that has most marked him, one of Bach, is not written for his instrument, "however I adapted it at the time." It is the second partita for violin solo, especially the Chaconne. I heard it from many people who were important to me and that's why he continued with me and encouraged me to continue with the instrument in a moment of weakness ".

The members of the Contrastes trio consider their concerts as a part of their journey towards happiness with music. According to Martinez, "the moments that I enjoy are in my house when I am a goldsmith with the notes and I can create". For Mederos, his moment of happiness occurs when he climbs onto a stage and reaches the audience. Rodriguez wants, above all, to enjoy on stage.
