The spokesman for Pope Francis, the American Greg Burke, and the deputy spokesperson, the Spanish Paloma García Ovejero, have submitted their resignation to the charge, as reported by the Holy See in a statement Monday. The pope has accepted the resignation.
In his place as director of the Vatican Press Room he has indicated "ad interim", provisionally, to Alessandro Gisotti, until now coordinator of social media in the Dicastery for Communication.
García Ovejero became the first woman who served as spokesperson for the leader of the Catholic Church. In a world strictly reserved for males, the arrival of the Spanish journalist was a gesture of the pope, who on numerous occasions has asked for forgiveness for the marginalization suffered by women in the Catholic Church, and has committed to strengthen their role in the posts of decision making in the Vatican.
