The Council of Ministers will approve this Friday the Royal Decree by which the maximum speed limit of 100 to 90 kilometers per hour will be reduced in the secondary roads, which are the ones that register more fatal accidents, have indicated to Efe sources of the Government.
The measure was on the agenda of Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska and DGT Director Pere Navarro, after they both advanced their intention to abandon the previous Executive's initiative to reform the Traffic Law and bet on legal reforms. As Navarro has expressed on several occasions, the objective of lowering the speed limit in conventional roads is that Spain is homologated with other European countries such as France, which has recently reduced to 80km / h and is more in tune with Belgium, Croatia , Greece, Italy, or Portugal, which have a maximum of 90 km / h in this type of roads.
Precisely, the conventional roads – one lane in each direction – are the ones that accumulate 77 percent of the deceased, where half of the accidents are caused by a way out and, as a general rule, by speeding.
The intention of Traffic is that the reduction of the speed is effective in the first months of the year, since according to the newspaper advances The country, the DGT has set a deadline of 30 days to adapt all existing signs using stickers, as was already done when the speed on motorways and motorways was temporarily reduced to 110 in 2011.
This reduction in the maximum limit will affect around 7,000 kilometers of roads where up to now it was possible to drive a maximum of 100 km / h if they had a subway of one and a half meters.
In addition, the drivers of vans, trucks and buses that until now could reach a maximum of 90km / h on these roads will have to travel with a limit of 80km / h.
