Seat launched a year ago Cupra as an independent brand focused on sports products. This Tuesday, taking advantage of the Geneva Motor Show, has officially presented the first car designed especially for that brand, the Cupra Formentor, the first plug-in hybrid of the Spanish manufacturer that will be launched on the market in 2020. The CEO of the brand, Wayne Griffiths has opened the door for the coupé SUV to be manufactured at the Barcelona plant: "Martorell is one of the alternatives".
So far, the Catalan facilities have been banned from the largest Seat cars, which are manufactured in plants in Eastern Europe. This is as much for the Ateca, the first SUV designed by Seat, as for the Tarraco, while the Catalan plant was concentrating on smaller segments and lower added value: the Ibiza, the León, the Arona and the Audi A1.
The arrival of Formentor, considered by the president of the company, Luca de Meo, "the best product in history" of the brand would be a change of procedure for Martorell, which is at historical production highs, in the shadow of the good results that the company is reaping.
Within the framework of the Geneva Motor Show, the Spanish brand has presented its two future bets in the electric segment. One is the Minimó, a small two-seater of 2.5 meters long that is a personal bet of De Meo to provide vehicles to car-sharing companies. The second is el-Born, an electric built on the modular platform designed by the Volkswagen Group that will be released in 2020.
