The risk premium is not at 250 points as Feijóo has said in his first speech in the Senate

The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has been completely wrong in his first speech in the Senate during the government control session. In his sermon in front of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, Núñez Feijóo pointed out that the risk premium is "250", but the reality is that the spread between the German and Spanish bonds is less than half of what has mentioned in opposition leader, 113 basis points.

“This morning an attempt was made to place 8,000 million euros in the Treasury, we are already paying the risk premium at 250 points, the highest since the summer of 2014”, is what Feijóo said during his first speech in the Upper House. The president of the PP has focused the first parliamentary duel with Pedro Sánchez on the situation of the Spanish economy.

But it is that he has not even been right with this indicator in 2014. The reality is that the risk premium was never in 2014 at the levels indicated by Feijóo. In fact, that year the high point of this risk indicator on the economy reached 213 points as its highest peak. In the summer of 2014 he was dancing between 142 and 135 points during the months of July and August, to end the year at 107 points.

Núñez Feijóo's blunder has been quickly answered by the Government. The First Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs, Nadia Calviño, accused the PP leader on Tuesday of "confusing" the interest rate with the risk premium.

Calviño has assured that the “auction held this Tuesday has had a positive result and has had a demand of four times the offer proposed by the Public Treasury and that it has closed at 2.4%, with the risk premium being slightly above the 100 basis points.

Calviño has stressed that the error of the president of the PP "highlights that he has to surround himself with better advisers in the economic field." Likewise, the first vice president considers that this first duel between Sánchez and Feijóo "has been illustrative", claiming that the chief executive "has explained clearly and competently the action of the Government and its vision of the future". According to her, she has said, Feijóo has “disappointed” her because “it is more of the same”.
