In the 21st century, a person admitted to a psychiatric unit can be tied hands, feet and waist to a bed for hours. That practice, called mechanical containment, is not unusual. Health departments jealously guard data on their use. However, the few statistics available and dozens of testimonials suggest that it is common and that it goes on for hours and days.
