Carolina Darias.

The Minister of Health currently has almost all the ballots to lead
the candidacy of the PSOE to the City Council of the capitalbut until the federal leadership announces it, the slogan is "nothing moves," according to a leader of the organization.

INTERNAL ELECTIONS

  • Announcement
The federal committee of the Socialist Party -the highest body between congresses- opened the primary process on July 23.

  • Delay
In the event that for political or organizational reasons in some area or institution the application of the calendar is not appropriate, the alternative calendar can be requested - before September 10.

  • 'Plan B'
This second calendar would postpone the presentation of candidacies until the second half of November, and they would be announced at the end of that month.

The
federal committee of the party already set a
primary calendar for all the institutions, although it left open the possibility of some
alternate dates later for cases in which
“for political or organic reasons” it is decided not to apply the initial deadlines.

In this case, a postponement may be requested.
before next September 10.

New dates

Thus,
the local secretary of the Capital Association and mayor of the city, Augusto Hidalgohe would have to convene his executive in the next few days to raise this delay and go to the
'Plan B'.

If this circumstance occurs, the
nomination dates would move from September 19-20 planned in a first phase to the
November 21-22.

This delay, sources from the PSOE of the Canary Islands explain, is a
formula "to gain time" before what in a large part of the socialist formation is taken for granted: that the minister
Carolina Darias will be the candidate for Mayor in 2023.

This possibility that evidences its
growing agenda of events in the city and that have nothing to do with his responsibility at the head of Health, such as the one that occurred this past weekend, which participated in the anniversary of a Latin sail boat.

Candidate 'with pull'

And it is that if this step were taken, surely the primaries would not be held. That is, even if they are summoned,
nobody would choose to compete with the ministerwho would be proclaimed a candidate for Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
replacing Augusto Hidalgo.

The mayor's decision to close his term in the City Council has left a difficult situation for the Socialists, who must have a candidate or
candidate who has enough 'pull' not only to continue as head of the Municipal Corporation, but also because
the capital of Gran Canaria is decisive in the local elections and who wins in the city, practically accedes to the insular Government.

In any case, this party leader points out that,
the process can be delayed from primaries until November
and that finally Ferraz decides not to do without Carolina Darias in the forefront of national politics and elections are held.

Although this possibility is considered in the party as the safest, the truth is that the words of Pedro Sánchez last August in La Palma stating that he did not have in mind to make any changes in his cabinet sowed some doubts.

Alternative

Although everything depends on the decision of Madrid and in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria they are still waiting for movements, from the local group they point out that this is one of the reasons that can delay the primaries because
"there are candidates".

In this sense, they refer to
Immaculate Medinawhich has already brought together members of the organization to assess the support before taking this step.

Another of the possible candidates is the counselor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria,
Isabel Mena. They insist in the PSOE that this internal process would stop if Sánchez finally decides to send Darias to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
