The Prosecutor’s Office asks 10 years for the former secretary of UGT-Asturias for diverting funds

The Prosecutor’s Office requests for the former UGT Secretary General of Asturias Justo Rodríguez Braga a sentence of ten years in prison for five crimes of subsidy fraud for the alleged diversion of 1.4 million euros from public funds for training courses between 2010 and 2014.

The other five former leaders and technicians of the accused unions face sentences of between 4 years and two months and 10 years in prison, while for the union organization the Public Ministry requests that a fine of 244,028 euros be imposed, as well as the loss of the possibility of obtaining subsidies or public aid for four years.

The Prosecutor’s Office maintains that the systematic diversion of public funds was carried out through various subterfuges with which UGT and its IFES Foundation (Institute for Training and Social Studies) managed to mask the real costs of executing the training actions for which they received subsidies.

The Prosecutor’s Office estimates that the benefits were destined to finance the union’s structural expenses, mainly the costs of its labor personnel, and to capitalize on a related company to, through it, cover losses generated in other activities.

The investigation began in Asturias in December 2014 following information obtained by the Central Operating Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard in the framework of an operation for similar events in Seville.
